Business can be a rather cut-throat environment, with many executives letting ego and greed get in the way of more noble pursuits.  How do you climb the corporate ladder without losing your sense of right and wrong?  Here are a few thoughts to periodically ponder as you progress through your career goals.

Examine Your Motives

When you feel that stirring in your stomach that something isn’t right, it may be that your body is showing signs of guilt.  Are you stepping on the toes of others for your own selfish needs?  Make sure you’re not taking advantage of your peers, and if you find out that you are – take a step back.  Share praise with the others who’ve helped you, and remember that they have goals and dreams just like you do.

Ask For Feedback

Even if one is not opinionated, everyone loves for people to ask their opinion.  Ask for (and listen to) your colleagues’, subordinates’ and supervisors’ opinions on projects when you know they would like to contribute.  When others aren’t heard, resentment begins to swell.  It’s important to hear ideas from many perspectives, because you’re only one person – and therefore are likely to not be able to see things from every angle.

Always Take the High Road

You may encounter associates who will try to persuade you to abuse others or convince you to do things that you find dishonest or unethical.  Resist the urge to give in to temptation, and make your own path that is honest and virtuous.  The true purpose of business is to provide goods and services to the world.  Its core principles need not involve ruthless competition, but rather a focus on quality and customer care.

From entry-level positions to upper management, you’ll encounter politics, moral dilemmas and important choices to make.  Always remember mind the reasons you got into your industry to begin with.  A strong moral conviction can help give you the energy and passion that it takes to succeed in business.  Though some may view morality and compassion as weaknesses in the business world, these are actually worthy traits that will help serve your clients – and, in turn, grant you the profits you desire.
